The Mid Century Years: A Study in Contrasts

Minimalist, sleek and elegant in design, décor and fashion; or mod, groovy, pop and op art, outrageous and whimsical. Mid Century was a period that brought us Mad Men, the Beatles, Lassie and Laugh In. The mood of the times was reflected in every aspect of life. It was truly a time to “do your thing.” The shops of Vintage and Main are revisiting all of the eras aspects, contemporary and timeless. What’s Your Style? Collecting Vintage Children’s Books

I Want to be a Dairy Farmer from Happy Fortune Vintage Ah, books. They’re beautiful to look at, comforting to carry and hold, and they often smell divine. They can transport us to a whole different world just by turning their pages. If you’re a book lover, chances are good you have a bookcase (or two) overflowing with different titles. My bookcase is an eclectic mix of my favorite novels, my boyfriend’s endless collection of sci-fi adventures, old textbooks, art references, and history books. But there is one corner of my bookcase that is special. It houses my small collection of prized children’s books. Wings for Per from Oceanside Castle…

    Not (Only) Heroes Wear Capes

As the weather turns chill and those autumn winds start to blow, many of us are pulling the coats and mittens out of the closet. If you’re like me, you may be disappointed to find that your trusty pea coat has seen better days. While shopping for a replacement I was frustrated with the lack of stylish modern jackets. Of course, you can always turn to the pages of Etsy to find a fantastic vintage coat for your fall wardrobe. But then I came across something truly unique: a vintage cape. Thick black wool and snazzy clasps made this piece just POP. Why not trade in your everyday jacket for…

The 1950s Housewife at the Office

Vintage fashion is something of a trend right now, with victory rolls and hair scarves popping up at your local farmers market or concert venue, paired with fitted waists, flared skirts, and capped sleeves to make any 1950s housewife envious. While there are wonderful events where you can go full-on vintage (here in Boston we just held a 1920s lawn party!), for the majority of us a good 5+ days a week are structured around office wear and business casual. The cost of a good vintage dress, even a bargain, can be hard to justify when it’s delegated to weekend-only wear. But as both a lover of vintage style and…

Updating Your Vintage Kitchen for Summer

Every year summer surprises me. I’m in a rush to catch up with all the end of year events and after all the graduation parties and wedding presents, it’s suddenly July. This year, I had an inspired idea. Before summer arrived, I decided to refresh the kitchen for the season. Things felt a bit stale and I wanted a new look to get us through these summer months. First stop: the kitchen. First, I did a deep clean. Amazing what was hidden under the stove after all the outdoor Spring fun my kids have dragged in. My five year old was thrilled to find several marbles, a bouncy ball and a purple toy car. I…
