Industrial Gifts from Vintage & Main

In 1867, Walt Whitman immortalized the American workman in his poem, “I Hear America Singing.”

“I hear America singing, the varied carols I hear,

Those of mechanics, each one singing his as it should be blithe and strong,

The carpenter singing his as he measures his plank or beam,

The mason singing his as he makes ready for work, or leaves off work,

The boatman singing what belongs to him in his boat, the deckhand singing on the steamboat deck…”

This poem represented one of the quintessential pieces which fashioned the American “voice.” The voices of workmen and women. The beauty and strength of industry. The power in the American heartland.

And the voice of the working man cannot just be heard in literature. It can resonate in the strength of found objects gracing your home. You can integrate that soul into your space with the beautiful lines of vintage industrial design.

  1. We love the look of recycled found ‘Industrial’ objects…rusty old bed springs (!), a vintage fan or typewriter, an antique cobbler’s bench…these things can give such interest to any decor!

    Great Blog feature, Mary Elizabeth.
